Custom Designing Corporate Logos For Construction Companies
August 19, 2009
The construction arena is growing more and more competitive. More established companies handle the larger development projects while smaller and newer firms must display their quality with various subcontracts before moving on to bigger projects.
My design firm has just been handed out an assignment to develop a new construction logo design for a local construction company. To kick off the assignment, the art director and I paid a visit to our client’s office for a brief interview session to find out more about the company.
Like many other companies we have interviewed, most companies recognize they need a new look to remain competitive but are not exactly sure what they want. That is where we come into play.
Before beginning work on the logo design, we commonly inquire about the history of the organization, its turnover, its philosophy, its specialty, its target market and exactly why it wants a new construction logo design; just to get a better perception of things.
We determined that they are a relatively young firm, 12 years in the business with 4 important subcontract projects and many minor ones under their belts, each one larger than the last. They are now seeking to adopt a blue ocean strategy and embark into into eco-friendly medium cost suburban development - a niche with very few competitors - and therefore taking the opportunity to create a reputation for themselves as one of the few firms to service this niche.
From the dialogue, we can gather that they have the required resources to engage medium scale development projects. Their chosen niche also makes it easier to distinguish them from other developers.
At our agency, we had a typical brainstorming session and and decided on the conceptual direction. From there we designated 4 designers to produce individual interpretations or logo samples to turn those creative concepts to images.
After several days, the design concepts were ready for show. Some designs utilized stylized text while others utilized construction related graphics like wheelbarrows and trowels to get the point across. Even though all four construction logo design samples were unique in their own way, they all stuck to two major points.
Professionalism
Developers deal with costly projects. To be considered for such projects, they must always be viewed as a professional and responsible organization with admirable business ethics. Hence, the neat and clear designs reflected that adequately.
Eco-Friendliness
This is the niche this company wants to penetrate. Not surprisingly, the designs, either by color or graphics, corroborates the company’s commitment to the preservation of the environment.
Finally it is up to our clients to decide on which of the four designs they prefer. However they could certainly make minor changes but as professional designers, we must make certain the design ultimately keeps to the key points pointed out earlier.
